US records another mass shooting in Ohio, 9 killed

Hours after 20 people died in a shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, at least nine people died, and 16 were injured in a fire in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Ohio Dayton police said the gunman was killed, the Associated Press reported.

Dayton police tweeted that an active shooter situation began in the Oregon District at 1:22 a.m., but nearby agents were able to “put an end to it quickly.” At least 16 others were taken to local hospitals with injuries, police said.

Miami Valley Hospital spokeswoman Terrea Little said 16 victims were received at the hospital, but could not confirm their conditions. Kettering Health Network spokeswoman Elizabeth Long said several victims of a shooting had been taken to hospitals in the system but had no details on how many.

The Oregon District is a historic neighborhood near downtown Dayton that houses entertainment options, including bars, restaurants, and theaters. Police have not said where in the district the shooting took place.

Both shots occur six days after a teenage gunman killed three people at a food festival in northern California.
