The Presidency reveals when the portfolios will be allocated

The Presidency has revealed that the National Assembly has not yet officially communicated to President Muhammadu Buhari about the finalization of the selection of ministerial candidates.

Recall the Senate on Tuesday, complete the exam and confirm the appointment as substantive ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 43 candidates initially sent by President Buhari.

After the successful completion of the exercise, many expected that the President would inaugurate the appointed ministers on Wednesday.

But speaking with journalists in Abuja, Buhari’s special assistant in matters of the National Assembly (Senate), Ita Enang, said: “The President, upon receiving the communication from the National Assembly, on a date to be fixed, will notify the selected and selected nominees. and open them as appropriate. ”

Responding to the great expectation that the President should have assigned portfolios to ministerial nominees before sending the list to the National Assembly, Enang said Buhari did nothing wrong since the country’s constitution did not ask him to do so.

He said: “You are saying that the President should have attached wallets. I am sure from 1999 to 2019, this question has been asked. This means that the question has been asked for the past 20 years.

“The constitution says that the President will appoint people as ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, subject to Senate confirmation. The constitution does not require the President or the governor to attach a ministry or a portfolio in his nomination to the legislature. ”

“The portfolios may change and the structure of the government may not be the same as before. When a minister is examined and approved, a portfolio is assigned.

“It may arise during the course of his mission, the President or the governor may decide to reassign him to another ministry.

If you assign (a portfolio) and the person is examined with respect to that portfolio, that means that the President may have to send the name to the Senate for evaluation or confirmation.

“That is why the constitution does not require assigning portfolios while sending (list) to the legislature. Therefore, the President has done nothing wrong. ”
