Nkwonta vs Abaribe: What happened at tribunal Monday

Chris Nkwonta, candidate of the Great Progressive Alliance (APGA) for the South Senate District of Abia, closed his case on Monday against Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of the People Democratic Party and two other respondents.

Nkwonta had approached the Elections Petitions Court of the National Assembly, sitting in Umuahia, to overturn the statement of the Senate Minority Leader as the winner of the February 23 poll.

He called 34 witnesses, although his advice, Mr. Ken Ahia (SAN), told the court that he had seven more witnesses, but decided to leave them for lack of time.

One of the witnesses, Kenneth Ijeoma, a Neighborhood Combination agent for APGA in Neighborhood 4, Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, told the panel that irregularities marred the election in all units under his supervision.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that Nkwonta is urging the court to overturn Abaribe’s election and declare him the winner. He claimed to have won the majority of the legal votes cast in the survey.

The panel president, Judge Adeyinka Aderibigbe, adjourned the session until Thursday for the first defendant, the Independent National Electoral Commission, to open his defense.
