Government stops political appointments

The Ebonyi state government announced Tuesday that it would no longer have political appointments.

Governor David Umahi said this when members of the State Executive Council increased from 70 to 83 after the swearing-in of three Senior Special Assistants (SSA), nine Senior Assistants (SA) and nine members of the Secondary Education Board (SEB).

The governor, who will swear before 26 commissioners on Wednesday, said: “The appointment in the SEB, for example, is not political sponsorship. Our problem in the state is that 99 percent of the designated people see, as political sponsorships.

“The people named as Senior Technical Assistants (STA) before, asked to be named as SA, which means they don’t understand what the position means.”

He commissioned the president of SEB to divide the members into Local Government Areas (LGA) and areas to prevent government anger from falling on the board, but in the low-performing members.

“There is no reason for SEB members to be in Abakaliki since 95 percent of their staff members should be in the field.

“Each date attracts more than 1,000 enemies. Designated persons should stop complaining about the portfolios assigned to them, but create wealth from them.

“No one has a particular ministry for himself and when he sees that a job is not done, do it and do not mind if the person complains about continuing,” he said.

Umahi urged the Secretary of the State Government (SSG) and internal security assistants to establish a security bond where banks and other members of the private sector would contribute.

“The banks have refused to help the government even by donating vehicles also though most of them owe it to us. Create the bond, meet the banks one by one and ask for help from society to do your job,” he said.
