Four fake Naval officers, others arrested in Benue

On Thursday, the Benue State Police Command paraded four fake officers of the Merchant Marine of Nigeria and 11 other suspects for alleged kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, child trafficking, and illegal arms manufacturing.

The state police commissioner, Mukaddas Garba, told reporters in Makurdi that the false naval officers arrested were: Stephen Oguniran, Daniel Igiho, Ada Ngbede, and Ada Ofugocho.

Garba revealed that fake officers were arrested on July 31 at an illegal checkpoint they set up in Kenya, Okpoga Road and were extorting motorists, reports NAN.

He also said that a Terna Taga, 18, was arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating a 10-year-old girl (hidden name).

Garba also said that the Force arrested Mkarvter Shagbe and Terseer Makuna from the Vandiekya local government area on August 2 with an AK47 rifle loaded with ten rounds of royal ammunition.

He said the additional investigation led to the arrest of the illegal weapons manufacturers, Terhembafan Sevav and Vishi Aviv.

“The police recovered two more AK47 rifles, two single-barrel bomb actions, two locally manufactured guns, four loaders, a gas cylinder, a variety of weapons and charms manufacturing tools,” he said.

The commissioner said the command also arrested one Daniel Achogwu for alleged child trafficking.

He said Achogwu, a resident of the city of Otukpo, took a pregnant girl to Aba, Abia state, where he was handed a boy who later sold to an unknown person.

Garba said an Emmanuel Ilom was arrested with a gun and cartridge manufactured locally during a detention and search operation in Ugbokolo.

He said the Force also arrested a Msonga Akujor, a resident in the village of Jootar in the local Ukum government, with an AK47 rifle during a raid.

Garba said an Ahmed Ali was arrested during an armed robbery attack on Ankpa Street, Otukpo City, after a distress call from some residents. “Ali was arrested with a gun and spells made locally and confessed that his gang members were still free,” he said.

He said the command recently deployed numerous strategies to combat crime in the state to guarantee a peaceful environment.

He said that through the new strategies, the command was able to “map possible black spots in the state and deploy its labor and resources to ensure that these places were secured.”

“Operation Puff Adder is securing roads and local governments where kidnapping and armed robbery were rampant.

“These strategies have helped the prevention of crime in the state and the detention of criminals. Several criminals have been charged in court,” he said.
