Flood kills boy, wrecks damage in Makurdi

Dondo While, the commissioner of Water Resources and Environment of Benue, says that a three-year-old boy allegedly drowned in flood after a torrential downpour in the early hours of Thursday in Makurdi.

According to the Nigeria News Agency (NAN), While told reporters, while assessing the impact of the flooding in the Wurukum area in Makurdi, the boy was identified as Tervershima.

He said the incident was reported during the inspection of the area. According to him, the state government has identified the cause of the flood to block sewers and narrow channels that are too small to handle the volume of water in the affected areas.

While said the government would do everything possible to solve the problem. He urged people living in flood-prone areas to evacuate those areas as soon as possible to avoid new disasters.

The commissioner said: “As a government, we will try to address some of the causes before the main rain arrives. “People who live in flood-prone areas must leave the areas because the government cannot relocate everyone at once.”

The flood submerged the Wurukum Market, the Wurukum Park, the Living Faith Church, and the Pleasure Travels Park in Wurukum.

Other affected places are Gyado, Villa Village, Villa Suit Hotel, parts of Idye and Achusa Village, among others, destroying many houses and properties.

NAN reports that flooding has become an annual challenge for the people of Makurdi. In 2017, the floods destroyed many houses and properties in more than 15 local government areas in the state.

As a merchant in the Wurukum market, John Eze said that his entire store with goods worth N2 million had been submerged leaving him with nothing. Eze said he was called to his shop by another merchant about development.
