Buhari Speck on killing of Catholic priest by suspected herdsmen in Enugu

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent his condolences to the Catholic Church for the murder of the Rev. p. Paul Offu, priest of the Catholic Church of the Greater Parish of St. James, Ugbawka, Enugu State, by alleged pastors.

GISTOK reported yesterday that the cleric was killed by men who were said to be pastors. A statement sent on Saturday by the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, said that “President Buhari expressed his deep shock and dismay at the murder of another priest, ordering an exhaustive search for the murderers and their immediate prosecution.”

“The President pities the government and the people of the state of Enugu, a family of Fr. Rev. Offu and members of the parish and all Christians.”

He then described the murder of the priest as “barbaric and unjustified.” Buhari assured the Catholic Church and all Nigerians that the fight against “illegality and imprudence” will intensify as the safety of lives and property continues to lead their priorities.

“The whole nation is shaken by the horrible murder of this priest. The administration will continue to guarantee freedom of religion and protect places of worship, as well as the lives of citizens wherever they live,” he added.

By ordering the law enforcement agencies to act quickly in their investigations and bring the perpetrators of the “horrible crime” to book, the President calls on all religious leaders to pray for peace, healing and country security.
